I usually export my LO documents to PDF (ones I do not expect to edit frequently). LO is pretty much compatible with MS Office file types and can read and save to them if compatibility with MS Office is needed (I prefer PDFs for cross platform compatibility, though). LO is free, doesn't need frequent security updates, doesn't have an EOL, and, in Linux, will not have the problems associated with running MS Office in Wine. There will be a learning curve but, once you get familiar with it, you will be able to do most things that could be done in MS Office and a few things that MS Office couldn't.
I recommend forgetting about MS Office and learning how to use LibreOffice (LO). In Word my Wife can use the review tab for her work as an editor so that she can use the editing stuff, which I don't think think LibreOffice Writer can give her.Īnyone else have any experience in using Playonlinux with Wine? The thing is, I have some fairly complex projects already compiled for both Excel and Powerpoint. Why bother you may say when Linux Mint has it's own version of these. I now have Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint up and running in Mint. Once completed I installed Microsoft Office ( selected components) pretty much without a hitch.
During installation it installed a heap of files etc. I bit the bullet and installed it which turned out to be a long but steady process. I did a web search and found an app called Playonlinux. I made various attempts at installing it but each time it failed to install or run. I have an old version of Microsoft Office - Home and Student 2010. I installed Wine 4.1 from the Mint software manager I had been struggling with the complexities ( to me as a newby) of installing Wine and then installing/running Microsoft office.
